Bio

Glen Kessler is an internationally collected and awarded artist as well as the founder of The Compass Atelier in Rockville, MD. Kessler has a MFA from New York Academy of Art and a BFA from MICA. His works have graced the cover of ‘Professional Artist Magazine’ and appeared in ‘The Artists' Magazine’ and other publications. He has work in the public collections of Prince Charles, Amazon Web Services, Ford's Theater, Capital One Bank, Dominion Bank, as well as hundreds of private collections around the world. He is a 2-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant for Outstanding Figurative Art, a Prince of Wales Fellow, and a Maryland State Arts Council Grant awardee. He is also a life-long teacher, having taught at MICA, GWU, GMU, and others. In 2013 he founded his own school, The Compass Atelier in Rockville, MD, in order to better teach a cohesive curriculum of artistic study of his own design. The school and its unique curriculum are proving to be a game-changer taking students, many of whom had little to no prior experience, to a professional practice in just 3 years of part-time study. Recent graduates have gone on to earn top prizes, regularly sell their work, and gain gallery representation. Classes are currently waitlisted through 2020.

Artist Statement

Glen Kessler is an artist who is passionate about craftsmanship and conceptual depth in his work. Since 2010, Kessler has worked primarily in two series: CircuitScapes and Toy Allegories.

In his CircuitScape series, Kessler explores in oil paint the similarities between computer circuitry and urban architecture. The visual similarities are uncanny at what Kessler calls 'street level,' but it is the metaphorical connections that he finds most compelling. As our culture evolves through its digital adolescence, questions of right and wrong, good and evil, faith and reason surface without answers. Through his compositions, color palette, and trademark use of 'bokeh,' Kessler strikes the balance between hope and uncertainty that he and so many others feel.

In his Toy Allegory series, the veiled narratives he renders in oils are more personal. Drawing from his role as a father of 3 young boys, Kessler uses toys to act out the questions he himself wrestles with as a father, husband, and citizen of the world. For example, "Is screen time poison to young minds or a training forum for multi-tasking and virtual interactions that will shape the coming decades?"
